Leonard K. Welsh, MD, FACS, FASMBS

A native of Central California, Dr. Welsh graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT with a degree in Linguistics. He went on to complete his medical doctorate at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, followed by general surgery residency training at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, HI. He completed a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the highly selective and prestigious Duke University in Durham, NC, including dedicated research focused on bariatric surgery outcomes.

Dr. Welsh is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and is one of few surgeons to hold a Focused Practice Designation in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He maintains active membership in several professional organizations, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American Foregut Society, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is the Medical Director of the bariatric surgery and obesity management program at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, an MBSAQIP accredited facility.

He has presented at numerous national conferences and has authored multiple book chapters and peer-reviewed publications. His clinical interests include metabolic and bariatric surgery, anti-reflux surgery, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and surgical ethics.

Dr. Welsh is proud to call western Colorado home and enjoys spending time with his family, playing hockey, and taking full advantage of the region’s abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.
